Learning to be a defensive driver could save your life

On Behalf of | Sep 6, 2023 | Car Accidents

According to state data records, a car accident occurs in Texas every 57 seconds, and many of these accidents result in serious injuries. While there are many different causes for these accidents, there are tools every driver can use to try and prevent them. Learning to be a defensive driver is a great way to start.

Be a planner

One of the best ways to prevent a motor vehicle accident is to have a plan before you get behind the wheel. Know which routes you will take in your drive and try to avoid high traffic areas and heavy traffic times. It is also smart to prepare for conditions on your route. For example, if the weather is bad, you should allow for more travel time.

Avoid distractions

Driving defensively means you are completely aware of your surroundings. Make sure you can concentrate on your driving and avoid any activity that may distract you. Examples of common distractions that can be dangerous while driving are texting, talking on the phone and eating. Even passengers can steal your attention from the road. Safe driving should be your first priority, and all other diversions should be avoided.

Be ready for anything

You can be the best driver in the world and still be the victim of a car accident caused by a careless driver. Therefore, it is important to protect yourself as much as possible. Keep a safe distance from other drivers and don’t follow too closely. Apply your brakes early when you come to a stop to give other drivers a good chance to see you, and always pay special attention to other drivers at road crossings.

A serious accident can change your whole life in a matter of seconds. Applying these defensive driving practices can help to avoid a car crash and prevent serious injury.
