Steps to take after a Texas car accident

On Behalf of | Jun 14, 2023 | Blog, Car Accidents

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, a car accident report occurred every 57 seconds in Texas in 2021. Even if you’re the safest driver in Texas, a car accident can happen before you know it. It helps to know what you should do following a car accident.

Remain on the scene

When motor vehicle accidents occur, those involved must remain on the scene. Fleeing the scene can result in fines and suspension of your license. In the event of a fatality, fleeing the scene can land you time in jail.

Report the accident

Call 911 and report the accident. Police officers and first responders such as paramedics or firefighters will also arrive if necessary. Calling 911 is important because you or someone else might need medical attention. And you’ll also need a police report if you decide to file an auto accident insurance claim.

You and others in the accident might feel that police involvement isn’t necessary. This might happen if the accident is very minor, and there are no injuries. However, you need the name of the other driver, their phone number, home address and driver’s license number. You’ll need their auto insurance information as well.

However, always call 911 if the other driver makes you fearful. If the driver is angry or violent, it’s best to have law enforcement on the scene.

Document the accident

If you have a smartphone, use it to record details of the auto accident. Take photos of the scene, your vehicle and any other vehicles in the accident. Also, note the date, location and time of the accident. This information will come in handy when speaking with your insurance company.

Contact your auto insurance company

Your insurance company can speak with the other driver’s insurance company. They can handle any claims that result from the accident.

A car accident can catch you off-guard. The shock of the accident can affect your ability to think clearly and make good decisions. To make things easier, keep your car registration and proof of insurance in a spot that’s easy to remember.
