Being more aware of motorcyclists

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2022 | Motorcycle Accidents

An experienced motorcycle rider likely deals with close calls and near misses frequently. Not every driver on the road picks up on the presence of motorcyclists, which can lead to trouble. Lack of awareness might lead to worse than a close call with a motorcyclist. A collision may happen and contribute to fatal accident statistics in Texas. Improved awareness of motorcyclists in the area and safer driver practices could decrease accident figures.

Being more aware of motorcyclists

One way to become better aware of motorcyclists is to look for them. Drivers may glance around to see any trucks or cars in the nearby lane or the intersection, but they might not look for motorcyclists. Since motorcycles could end up in blind spots, putting extra effort into looking for motorcyclists seems advisable.

Sometimes, a driver doesn’t notice a motorcyclist because the motorcyclist engages in lane-sharing. Lane-sharing and splitting may increase the chances of a collision. So, motorcyclists may benefit from avoiding such dangerous behavior.

Drivers should be careful at intersections, especially when making left-hand turns. The danger of hitting motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians could increase when turning. Risks might further increase when drivers go through red lights or don’t make complete stops when turning on red.

Safer driving and fewer accidents

An accident could happen even when everyone involved tries to avoid collisions. That said, the potential for a crash likely decreases when drivers and motorcyclists behave appropriately. Aggressive and reckless actions on the road may result in motorcycle accidents. Those who cause any crashes may suffer the consequences.

Motorcyclists risk suffering far worse injuries than a car or truck driver. After all, a motorcyclist isn’t inside a vehicle and lacks the protections a car’s frame provides. Drivers who hit motorcyclists could cause catastrophic injuries. The liable party might suffer a substantial civil judgment if negligence led to the accident.
