4 steps to protect your rights after a car wreck

On Behalf of | Feb 6, 2020 | Car Accidents

Being involved in a car wreck is a stressful experience, but you can’t let the stress lead you into making decisions that might work against you in the future. When you’re in a car accident that’s somebody else’s fault, you might choose to seek compensation for the financial damages that are related to the crash. Your actions after the incident can affect your success, so try to make decisions that will work in your favor:

1. Get appropriate medical care.

After the accident, you contact emergency services to have a police officer come out. If you have any injuries, asking for an ambulance is likely a good idea. Adrenaline might mask some injuries, so you may need to visit a doctor later if you start noticing symptoms.

2. Get as much evidence as possible.

At the scene of the wreck, take the time to document what you see. This can be as simple as taking pictures of the vehicles and scene, but you might choose to write out what you see. Things like any weather or similar factors that contributed to the crash are important. You should also gather the contact information for the other driver and any witnesses.

3. Watch what you say.

When you’re discussing the car wreck that injured you, stick to the facts. Don’t say anything that might make someone who hears you think that you’re saying you’re responsible for the crash. If you opt to seek compensation, admissions of fault can work against you.

4. Keep detailed records of your expenses.

Your claim for compensation can include more than just repayment for medical bills. Lost wages because of the wreck and similar damages can be included in your claim for compensation.

If you were recently injured in a car accident, find out how you can start to financially recover through legal means.
