Defensive driving tips to help keep you safe

On Behalf of | Jun 22, 2019 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury

Defensive driving goes a long way in helping you avoid trouble on the road. With the right approach, you can prevent accidents while avoiding run-ins with aggressive drivers.

Unfortunately, many people don’t know what it means to drive in a defensive manner. Conversely, they’re entirely too aggressive on the road, which puts them at risk of an accident.

Here are five defensive driving tips anyone can follow:

  • Plan your trip: A clear idea of what you’re getting into can help you prepare for everything that will come your way. For example, if you know you’re driving into rush hour traffic, you can leave more time in your schedule so you don’t find yourself in a hurry.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: You should constantly scan your surroundings, making note of anything that could cause an accident. Maybe you spot a construction zone ahead. Or maybe you spot a driver who is texting, not focusing on the road.
  • Leave a greater following distance: The more space you leave between your vehicle and others, the more time you have to stop in an emergency. This is particularly important in wet weather, as it takes longer to stop your vehicle.
  • Don’t react to others in an aggressive manner: There will be times when another driver angers you, but you shouldn’t act out in aggression. Instead, remain calm and focus on your safety.
  • Avoid distractions: A distracted driver isn’t a defensive driver. From your cellphone to GPS controls, distractions are everywhere. By avoiding these, you’ll feel better about your ability to prevent trouble when you’re behind the wheel.

Once you dedicate yourself to becoming a defensive driver, you’ll soon find yourself thinking more about safety and the steps you can take to prevent trouble.

If you’re injured in a motor vehicle accident, such as one caused by a distracted driver, do the following:

  • Move to the side of the road if you’re able to do so
  • Check yourself and any passengers for injuries
  • Call 911 to request an ambulance
  • Receive medical treatment for your injuries
  • Contact your insurance company to file a claim (never accept the initial offer)

By taking these steps, you put yourself in position to protect your legal rights and seek all the compensation you deserve.
