Bicycle commuters must follow these safety tips

On Behalf of | Oct 5, 2017 | Blog, Firm News

As a bicycle commuter, you probably enjoy this mode of transportation. Maybe you have found that it can save you quite a bit of time and money, while also helping you get a high level of exercise every day.

While there is nothing wrong with riding your bike to and from work, here’s something to remember: Your safety should always come first.

A bicycle accident can result in serious injury or even death, as a collision with a motor vehicle puts you in a compromising position.

Here are some of the many tips that bicycle commuters should follow at all times:

  • Watch for opening doors. When a door opens into your lane of travel, it can be a challenge to get out of the way. If you’re unable to move, you’ll strike the door head on.
  • Beware of the intentions of drivers. You hope that every driver is willing to share the road, but you know that this is not true. Be sure to signal when appropriate and make eye contact when necessary.
  • Use the bicycle lane. Depending on where you’re riding your bike, there may be a dedicated lane of travel. A bicycle lane is not for motor vehicles, so this is the best place to ride.
  • Pass behind pedestrians. You don’t want to bolt in front of a pedestrian, as this can startle the person, which could lead to an accident.

If you find yourself part of a bicycle accident, don’t hesitate to call 911. You need to make sure that police and an ambulance arrive at the scene as quickly as possible.

Once you receive medical treatment, it’s time to learn what happened and to then focus on your legal rights.

While the tips above are among the best tips for bicycle commuters, others may come to mind as you make your way down the road.

What has helped you stay safe while biking?
