Do you know how to spot a drunk driver?

On Behalf of | Apr 11, 2017 | Drunk Driving Accidents

As you make your way down the road, you must pay attention to everything happening around your vehicle.

Despite the best efforts of the state of Texas and its many law enforcement officials, drunk driving remains a problem.

With this in mind, it’s important that you know how to spot a drunk driver. This knowledge will go a long way in helping you avoid trouble.

Here are some of the signs of intoxication in a driver:

— Speeding, often accompanied by quick accelerations and decelerations

— Following too closely

— Weaving in and out of traffic, often without signaling

— Striking objects, including but not limited to parked cars and signs

— Driving somewhere that is not designated for vehicles, such as the sidewalk

— Drifting across lanes of travel

— Changing direction abruptly

— Driving in the dark without headlights

— Using turn signals that do not match the actions taken

— Making illegal turns

— Driving the wrong direction on a oneway street

— Straddling the center line

If you witness a driver acting in a strange manner, it’s important to keep your distance. By doing so, you lessen the likelihood of being involved in an accident.

Tip: You should also consider calling the police to report the driver. By doing so, you may save someone else’s life.

With this information, you will find it easier to spot a drunk driver. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always mean that you’ll be able to do so before trouble strikes.

Even when you pay attention to what’s happening around you, a drunk driver could pop up out of nowhere and cause an accident. An example of this would be a person who runs a red light, thus striking your vehicle as you proceed through an intersection.

In the event of a drunk driving accident, make sure you do these three things:

  1. Call 911 to ensure that the police and an ambulance arrive on the scene as soon as possible.
  2. Receive immediate medical treatment and then follow the advice of your medical team.
  3. Learn more about your legal rights.

With the help of a personal injury attorney, you can better understand your rights and if you’re in position to receive compensation. You may be able to file a lawsuit with the hope of receiving compensation for your injuries, lost wages and other damages.
