On Feb. 14 just before 2 a.m., two cars collided head-on in a serious auto accident on U.S. 87 north near the Grape Creek Road intersection in San Angelo that left a 21-year-old San Angelo man dead. Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to pry both drivers out of their cars, and one was airlifted to the hospital.
A Hyundai Elanta was traveling north in the southbound lanes, according to the Texas DPS. At the same time, a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south in the southbound lane, and the two cars collided with full force on the driver’s side of each, trapping both drivers in their vehicles. According to unofficial reports of witnesses, the driver of the Malibu was pinned between his seat and the dashboard and his feet had gone through the floorboard and were resting on the grass below.
The driver of the Malibu and his passenger were rescued first and sent to a Shannon hospital by ambulance, where the driver was pronounced dead. His 19-year-old female passenger has incapacitating injuries, according to the DPS. Airmed 1 took the Elantra driver, an 18-year-old San Angelo female, to Shannon Medical Center, where she was listed as having incapacitating injuries. A DPS trooper stated that it is too early to determine whether alcohol was involved in the accident.
