A Texas man died in a Sept. 18 crash in Newton County, according to authorities. The incident reportedly occurred on Highway 87 at approximately 5:45 a.m.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a Chevrolet passenger vehicle tried to pass a northbound Dodge pickup truck on a stretch of Highway 87 where passing is prohibited. Upon encountering a southbound Ford pickup truck, the driver of the Chevrolet attempted to veer back into the northbound lane but lost control of the vehicle. Consequently, the Chevrolet struck both pickup trucks.
According to officials, a 48-year-old man driving the Ford pickup truck and a male passenger in that vehicle both suffered injuries requiring hospitalization. The nature of their injuries was unclear in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 21-year-old man, died at the scene of the wreck, officials pronounced. The Dodge pickup truck driver reportedly escaped the accident uninjured.
